DOES IT BRING YOU JOY? MARIA KONDO'S WARDROBE RULE WE ALL NEED TO LIVE BY

Does The Marie Kondo Method Work?

When Emily Gilmore hopped on the Marie Kondo method, I realized maybe she was onto something. While getting rid of the dining room chairs because 'they don't bring me joy' (imagine this said in the Emily deadpan) may have been a bit extreme, Kondo's method has been gaining more & more merit over the years.

It's simple; you organize your things into categories & go through them, holding each one in your hand. If it sparks joy when you hold it, you keep it. If it doesn't bring you joy, out it goes.

I don't hold this as gospel for ~everything~ (especially books. When she said to get rid of the books in her new Netflix show, literary twitter went OFF. Keep all the books you want, y'all) but when it comes to your wardrobe, this method can save you both time & so much closet space.

For the longest time I had a TIME cleaning out my closet & getting rid of clothes. I wanted to hold on to everything, even things I hadn’t worn in at least a year.

I know. Even the teacher/ kind-of-expert struggles sometimes.

The Marie Kondo Method

And BOY I STRUGGLED.

So when I first heard of the Marie method, I knew I needed to implement it right away. By taking the things from your closet- especially the things you always pass up- & asking yourself 'does this bring me joy when I wear it? Do I like wearing it? Does it make me feel on my A-game?' you put actual thought into it. If the answer is no, or if there’s hesitation in your yes, GET RID OF IT!

It’s a simple enough method but I think a lot of times we’re scared to get rid of things we’ve held onto, for one reason or another. Maybe I’m being too dramatic (what’s new) but once you let that go & purge, you can make room for new pieces that you love.

Have you tried this method? How do you get rid of old clothes? & have you watched Marie's new show yet? I've only seen one episode atm...
