A Look Into The Complexity Of Swimwear Shopping

“Do you think a woman has ever gone swimsuit shopping without wanting to cry?” My friend’s words floated through our group chat and landed with a solid ‘amen.’ If there was ever an activity that evoked such strong emotion, it’s shopping for swimwear.

I don’t know exactly how it got to that point, though I suspect it has something to do with ~society~ (it always comes back to that, doesn’t it?) Somehow we’ve gotten so caught up in if our bodies look toned enough or if we’ve done enough crunches or how much we can try to have Michelle Obama arms (goals? sure. attainable? not always) that we have mascara- tear filled fits in the fitting room.

There’s a saying that goes something like ‘Want a bikini body? Put on a bikini. There.’ In theory, it’s that simple, but in practice.. not so much. The thought of proudly parading in swimwear is intriguing, yet cringeworthy for the lot of us. Is it in fact, society telling us we have to be kim k. to rock a two piece, the world of instagram telling us that edited, filtered photos are reality, our own deep rooted insecurities screaming for a way out.. or a little bit of all of the above? Will we ever get to that place of ~body positivity~ that we no longer care about how we look in a swimsuit?

Complexity Of Swimsuit Shopping

I’d like to think so, but with social media on the rise and no end in sight of airbrushing and lack of body diversity in media, I don’t see it happening anytime soon. So what ~can~ we do? How do we break the ‘crying in the fitting room’ cycle? It takes a lot to have complete confidence in your body, and often times it’s an exhausting process. I’d say the best approach would be to just fake it til ya make it, but oh how it’s so much easier said than done.

Contrary to belief, confidence doesn’t come from Instagram likes or the number on the scale, it comes from within. Call it a cliche, but it’s perhaps one of the truest of them all. Try taking photos of you in a swimsuit, just for you. Tell yourself you look ~hot.~ & when all else fails, there is safety in numbers. Gather your gals for a shopping trip & compliment the daylight out of each other.

If comparison is the thief of joy shopping for bathing suits is a close second. Or so we’ve been told to believe.
