Recent Music Faves

The fact that Lorde is about to release her sophomore effort has given me a renewed love for new music. (with some old thrown in)

I've been into pop vibes lately, with a hint of light rock a la John Mayer. (I wish he wasn't such a good musician. Or at least be a better person, like COME ON)

I love pretty things & I love a good deal even more. SO when the two are put together.... magic happens.

There are so many fun trends going on for the summer: gingham, big sun hats, embroidered EVERYTHING, the list goes on.

Which is why I've created my own little list of budget finds I'm a little in love with, including THIS ROMPER & all the gingham. Have a look!

I've touched on my semi-newfound love of jumpsuits before, & I'm always on the hunt for strong, petite fitting ones.

I love this culotte piece in particular, with its fitted waist & straight cut neckline. The floral pattern makes for a strong statement on its own, but I like adding a touch more of personality with something like a belt and a fun necklace. Not too much, but the belt draws even more attention to the waist, & who doesn't want that?

I originally bought this for easter, but it's quickly become a piece in high rotation. OF COURSE it's sold out at the moment, but I've linked some similar ones down below for ya!

I had another post planned for today, but I felt I couldn't be silent about the things on my heart. I'm sure by now you've heard about the Manchester attacks, & any time a tragedy like this happens I think my brain fails to recognize the full depth, because it's so fixated on the why. Why are there such horrible people in this world, who take innocent lives & not bat an eyelash? I don't believe for a second God lets it happen, so how is it done?

Some of my happiest memories, the times I've felt most alive, have been when I'm singing along with thousands of strangers that become friends for the night, captivated by the music that is universal to us all. Concerts are supposed to be a safe place, so what happens when we can't even be safe in the places that feel like home?

Just sitting back & watching these tragedies seems passive & unproductive, but how do we help? In this case, donating to this fundraiser started by the Manchester News is a good start. If you can't donate, spread the word. As of Tuesday night, there are still fifteen people missing. The power of social media is amazing & has already helped one missing girl be found.

Keep loving, keep being a light. Don't let the world put out your fire just yet.

Skincare Notes.

Monday, May 22, 2017

Starting in your 20s, skincare is an imperative part of self care, & it's important to establish a bit of a routine, or at least have favorite products on hand to reach for. Over the past couple years I've gotten a little groove going & have figured out what typically works for my combination skin:

// toner
A good toner is beneficial for soothing & repairing the skin, removing all traces of makeup in the process. & it's super refreshing! Spritz some on after nighttime cleansing for a wind down, or in the morning for a little refresher.

// eye cream
It's never too early to start paying attention to your eye area, as it's one of the main areas that begin to age. A dab of cream at night helps to minimize puffiness & protect the under eye area. (on the under eye note, I've also just ordered an ice roller to add to my routine-- will update!)

// weekly mask
A weekly pamper is SO HELPFUL for your mental health & overall sanity. & so is a weekly face mask, in my opinion. Filled with antioxidants, it's an anti-aging weapon in liquid (or sheet) form. Add a rose mask for anti-inflammatory benefits as well. Any mask option is a gentle, refreshing skin treat.

// moisturizer
Perhaps the most important, a moisturizer with an SPF is a wrinkle & skin cancer fighter, plus it keeps the skin hydrated & ready to go. It's not news that moisturizing is imperative for healthy skin, but it's easy to forget or skip & say 'mmmm I'll do it next time'. DON'T SKIP IT!

// oil
Facial oil is like icing on a cake; a perfect makeup primer, dry skin hydrator, and toxin fighter, oils provide a lock in of protection. I like to dab some under my eyes & on my cheeks after cleansing & toning at night.

What are your skincare must haves?

When each new season hits, it's tempting to buy ALL THE CLOTHES. But it's more efficient (& easier on the bank account) to only add what you really need for the upcoming season.

1// Take inventory
Be a shopper in your own closet. See what pieces you already have, getting rid of anything that doesn't fit right, you haven't worn since 2015, or you're just not feeling anymore.

2// Make of a list of what you need.
After you have a visual of pieces you might be missing, make a checklist of it all, starting with high priority going down to low. I list the stores I'll be looking for each item at as well, so I'm not all over the place.

3// Online first.
Once everything is listed, take an online shop inventory & see if any of the items you need are available online. (they most likely will be) Sometimes their online prices are less expensive! Of course unless it's somewhere like asos, in which case online is your only option.....
THEN once you've done virtual, it's time for the stores.

Ready, set, SHOP!!

I like to believe the whole 'putting your love & support for women on clothing items' trend started with monica geller's 'girls girls girls' sweater way back in '94. Yes, mon!

I hope the trend of girl power is a lasting one, as with the trend of a good 'ole graphic tee. I looove these for summer, paired with a fun neck scarf  & a pair of shorts.

I've rounded up some more girl power picks for you! :

Dating & The Twentysomething.

Monday, May 15, 2017

A popular conversation topic between my friends & me is the disastrous state of dating. I'm a big believer in defending my generation, but dating is one thing we've gotten painfully wrong. Between the apps, the whole 'talking' thing, (DOES ANYONE EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS?) casual dating.... it's all just so, blase.

Whatever happened to the real stuff? & why have we become so obsessed with dating or being in a relationship? Obviously there are times when I long for it, & then there's the times when I momentarily freak out, just knowing I'll be alone forever. Since when did we become that? Society has made us feel like there's something wrong with singleness, like we're missing a part of us, even if we have a fulfilling career, friends, etc etc... it's always "are you dating?" or "I know the PERFECT guy for you!"

To which you smile & shake your head, but in your mind you're thinking 'uh, I WOULD be dating if it weren't for the fact that the guys with a shred of decency instead of 'wyd' texts have hidden away in some far away land.'

Maybe it's you. Maybe it's them. The only thing for certain is that somewhere along the way, we screwed up. We let society tell us that we MUST BE DATING so do anything for it. Settle if you have to. Conform. & now we're left with a generation of people wondering 'what's wrong with me' & thinking they're less than.

We need to do better.

Growing up I thought dating would just fall into my lap. I'd befriend someone & we'd fall in love cory & topanga style, the rest being history.

If only.

Lately On Instagram

Friday, May 12, 2017

// If you're not new to my insta, you know I have a thing for blue nails. This baby blue color is one of my very favorites!

// I like having my room a chill place & books & candles really spice it up. The on brand comforter helps too!

// LOVE a good denim on denim look- the top is from target a couple seasons ago but I've linked similar ones here & here. An easy style hack to make an outfit look effortless chic- tie your top in a 90s style twist.

// I FINALLY TRIED THE PINK DRINK! & how on brand is it?? (hey oh VS backdrop) I was actually very tempted to add a shot of espresso, because what's a starbucks without the coffee? But I decided against it & it was still super good- a perfect summer refresher!

// Luckily I got this #OOTD shot in before the mystery stains on my top happened. Denim + lace/ crochet is one of my all time fave combos for the summer! // Similar top here, similar shorts here & here

Happy weekend!

I've worn a variation of this outfit dozens of times, but each time it becomes something new.

A simple off the shoulder top like this one tied at the waist is a versatile look that I love for summer. Mixing simple pieces is a good way to refresh your wardrobe using pieces you already own.

(this top is very sheer, so I wear a tank under for a cold shoulder look! easy fix)

top | f21
tank | f21
skirt | target (similar)
shoes | thrifted (similar here)

It's been awhile since I've had a chat about my anxiety, & it's mental health awareness month so I thought I'd give it another go:

Over the past year or so with the help of a therapist, I've been able to really pinpoint my triggers (the ones I didn't already know) & figure out what coping methods work & don't work for me. I can honestly say I'm in a really good place right now, with super lovely friends I could go on & on about. I'm being more mindful, focusing on the little things that are in reality the big things. I'm laughing more, belly-full & genuinely.

I'm still anxious.

I'm anxious when I'm idle, I'm anxious when I'm busy. I'm anxious when I'm in the middle of an eight hour retail shift & when I'm in the middle of a three hour netflix binge. Anxiety is a huge part of my life, but it's not the only part. It's not the important part of who I am & it's always a work in progress, figuring out what works & sometimes taking one step forward & three panic attacks steps back.

For a bit I was hard on myself when I regressed, which only ended up making things worse. It was an endless cycle of negative self-talk & feeling like I had somehow failed, which just started the cycle over again. I wasn't naive to believe that once I learned coping methods everything would be roses and sunshine, but sometimes it's like WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??

I'm learning to cut myself a break, whether it be figuratively or literally or both. A mental illness like anxiety never quite leaves completely, there are just good periods & bad periods & it's how you deal with them that matters, like most things in life. I like to live my life with good coffee & even better friends, loud music & even louder laughter, and that is something I'll take with the bad any day.

I now allow myself to wallow on the 'bad anxiety days.' Sometimes I accomplish nothing but watching episodes of gilmore girls I've seen fifty times, (NEVER GETS OLD, OK) & that's okay because I know there'll be 'good anxiety days'; the days I forget all the horror in the world, all my worries & just be

That exists. So don't be so hard on yourself, ok?

I always love going through all the swim trends for the season & finding ones I like. (now that VS stopped swim, I don't know who's queen!)

ALSO is it just me or is decent swimwear for the..... blessed girls more & more difficult to find? Normally Target gets me but this year nothing seems to fit. After some digging, I did find ASOS has a decent selection, but the thing about them is you can't try it on before you order it.

Anyway, I've rounded up some on trend picks: prints, one pieces & pretty details.

I've had bangs for really all my life, save a time in middle school when I grew them for a bit, along with rocking my A+ perm. (I looked for some photos but I couldn't find them... CONVENIENT, I know but I PROMISE I TRIED) & I've pretty much always parted my hair to the side, both because I was comfortable that way & the bangs + part hid my big forehead pretty well. & so I stuck with the look, even when it felt I'd outgrown it.

But recently I decided to give the grown out bangs another go, because I no longer care about the size of my forehead. Crazy, right?? I've always liked the look of the middle part & now I've gone for it, embracing something I used to hide. I've found myself doing a lot of that lately and I can't tell you how freeing it is. Why do we care so much about things so small in the scheme of everything? If you wanna do it, do it. So what if you fail or you look silly or it doesn't turn out the way you thought? Life is meant to be lived & lessons meant to be learned.

ANYWAY, back to middle parts. Something about them looks so chic to me, especially when they're not perfectly in the middle.

Some inspo via pinterest:

Obviously I haven't forever abandoned the side part, but the middle is definitely favorable at the moment.

Which part do you prefer?
