That list everyone's making

Thursday, November 27, 2014

We all seem to be sharing what we're thankful for, so here's some cool things that make me smile.

+ I'm thankful for leggings. They're only the most comfy pants ever and once you wear them as pants there's just no going back. Is the sorry not sorry hashtag still alive? #sorrynotsorry

+ I'm thankful for those pretty little liars keeping my Tuesdays interesting and highly confusing. When they're in season, anyway. When's that winter premiere again??

+ I'm thankful for that Starbucks life. Actually, that any-kinda-coffee-that-isn't-decaf life. Because of it, I can function like an actual person.

+ I'm thankful for all the Stevie pup kisses. Even the really wet ones.

+ I'm thankful for Taylor Swift. Because who even am I if I don't throw that one in?

+ I'm thankful for yummy candles and Christmas music.

+ I'm thankful for those Gilmore girls, who have given me much knowledge on sarcasm and pop culture over the years. Really.

+ I'm thankful for pizza. Always there for me, always supportive.

+ I'm thankful for cheesy Lifetime movies that are sometimes good but I still can't quite take seriously. You keep doin' you, though.

+ And I'm thankful for you. Thanks for commenting and reading and generally being rad people.

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all. If you need me, I'll be here, eating all the things and yelling at the Cowboys to do the thing. #eaglessuck

The one with all the Friends Thanksgiving episodes

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

The best things about Thanksgiving? Food, football, and the Thanksgiving episodes of Friends, of course. So I've a created a comprehensive, in-depth look at each episode and ranked them accordingly, just for you.

You like how I sounded all technical?

10// The One With Rachel's Other Sister, season nine: If I had it my way, none of the episodes would be ranked last, but that would be confusing. In season nine's episode, Rachel's other sister Amy comes to visit and wants to take care of Emma if Ross and Rachel die. Also, Chandler breaks Monica's plates. Yikes.  Perfectly quotable moments in this one, although it's not on my top list.

9// The One With the Rumor, season eight: AKA The One With Brad Pitt, whose character Will comes to Thanksgiving dinner, and it's revealed that he was in an "I Hate Rachel Green" club with Ross in high school. My personal favorite quote from this one is "Here come the meat sweats."

8// The One With Chandler In a Box, season four: This is the one after Chandler kisses Joey's girlfriend Kathy, and the only way Joey will forgive him is by spending Thanksgiving dinner in a box. Memorable quote: "Airhole! Airhole!"

7// The One With the List, season two: Season two is the only one without an actual Thanksgiving episode, and I did some digging for reasons why but I couldn't find a definitive one. There are mentions of the holiday, however, as Monica makes "mockolate" to have at dinner. Extra points for all the Ross and Rachel fluff.

6// The One With the Late Thanksgiving, season ten: Phoebe enters Emma into a baby beauty pageant and she and Rachel end up being late for dinner. Actually, everyone ends up being late except for Monica and Chandler, who {like always} are hosting, and they feel unappreciated and decide to lock everyone out. This is the last Thanksgiving episode ever which gets lots of sentimental points.

5// The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs, season seven: This season is one of my favorites, so extra points for that. When Phoebe's babysitting a neighbor's dog and tries to bring him to dinner, it's revealed that Chandler hates dogs. The gang also plays "Chandler's Dumb States Game," which I would love to play one of these days, thank you very much. Favorite quote? "It's moo."

4// The One Where Underdog Gets Away, season one: Ah, the one where it all began. Everyone's Thanksgiving plans are ruined, and they all end up at Monica's. Also, the Underdog float gets away at the parade. Obviously. This one really sets the tone for the rest of the Thanksgiving episodes. Also, "Potatoes are ruined, potatoes are ruined, potatoes are ruined."

3// The One With the Thanksgiving Flashbacks, season five: This one is full of Thanksgivings past, including Monica trying to fake seduce Chandler back when he was in college. Every flashback is great. My favorite quote is definitely "There's a toe in my kitchen."

2// The One Where Ross Got High, season six: This one is full of secrets being revealed and gross desserts. And every minute of it is hilarious. "Hurricane Gloria didn't break the porch swing, Monica did!"

1// The One With the Football, season three: By far my favorite Thanksgiving episode of the Thanksgiving episodes. Maybe it's because it's centered around football, I'm not really sure. What I do know is it's twenty two minutes of pure genius. Rachel goes long, Monica and Ross vie for the Gellar Cup, and the girls wonder if there's a league for football. Basically, it's all classic Friends shenanigans that deserves to be re-watched year after year.

Happy almost Thanksgiving!

Link love

Friday, November 21, 2014

I'm going to be totally honest and tell you that I don't really have a post for today. I have a bunch in the works but I didn't finish any of them in time for this lovely Friday. #bloggerprobs

So instead, I thought I'd share some of my favorite links from this week. Read away, my friends.

+ Sarah shares a delicious recipe for cake batter confetti popcorn. AKA I need to make this asap.

+ Sarah also tells us all the fun things to do in Deep Ellum for all the fellow DFW folks out there.

+ Lizzie gets real about depression.

+ Summer reminds us that even the small victories count.

What are your favorite links this week?

Dealing with anxiety

Thursday, November 20, 2014

The first memory I have of feeling anxious is being five years old and terrified of being late to school. I was never late to school, yet every morning in the car I would freak out. I remember my stomach being in knots and feeling sick. And I cried. A lot. Of course, back then I had no idea what anxiety was or that what I was feeling was out of the ordinary. So I just went with it. And let me tell you, living with anxiety isn't easy in the first place, let alone when you don't even know you have it. When there was finally a name for it, I felt relieved, like "oh, this is what I have and I can deal with it." Unfortunately, there's no miracle pill for anxiety disorder. No shot you can take that makes you feel instantly at ease. If there was, I would get it in a second. And I hate shots.

Everyone gets spouts of anxiety of times. That nervousness you feel before a major test, the big game, or you perform on stage? That's a normal part of the fight or flight response. So how do you know what's not normal when it comes to anxiety?

Feelings of panic or fear

These are just some of the symptoms that come with anxiety disorder, and they can interfere with your everyday life.

Anxiety is such a difficult thing to explain to people. Sometimes I don't even fully understand it, so how could I explain it to someone else? I do know that it's different for everyone, but somehow still so similar. The racing heart. The feeling of absolute dread, that everything around you is caving in. It can be crippling and isolating. Living with this disorder can make you become depressed, which can increase the anxiety, which can make you more depressed, and then it's like this awful maze that you just can't seem to find your way out of. So what do you do?

Self care is really important and I've found that if I'm feeling especially anxious, doing something soothing can be therapeutic for me and calm the anxiety. Anything you can do to get your mind off the anxious feeling is helpful, really.

I used to never attempt breathing exercises because none of them worked for me, but recently I saw a post on tumblr that talked about breathing in for four seconds, holding for seven, and then exhaling for eight. I thought I might as well try it, and it actually does help. I haven't tried it in the midst of a bad attack, but if I'm feeling like one might come on, I take a second and breathe.

If you're in a place you can listen to music, listen to it. It honestly makes a world of difference.

Talking it out can be helpful as well. I don't know how many times I've had to call my mom and have her talk me down. Sometimes just venting and telling someone your worries can be calming. However, only come to people who you trust and who are willing to help and not judge you.

If someone you love suffers with anxiety, I recommend doing as much research on it as possible. It's impossible to understand it 100% unless you experience it, but you can be knowledgeable on the subject. Be there for the person with open ears and arms. Never trivialize their fears or tell them to "just stop worrying." That does no good. Most importantly, please understand that we don't want to have anxiety. But it's there and it's not gonna be leaving anytime soon.

You are not alone in your anxiety, or any mental illness for that matter. It's so much easier said than done, but you can't let it control you. You're so much more than "that person with the anxiety." Remember that.

Thanksgiving Style

Here's what I'm thinking outfit wise for Thanksgiving next week. Comfy sweaters and leggings are basically my wardrobe for this time of year anyway, so why not go with it?

My eczema defense tools

Monday, November 17, 2014

I think I came out of the womb with eczema. Maybe that's too much information for a Monday morning, so let's just say I've dealt with eczema for a very long time. In fact, it used to be so bad that my mom would have to put masking tape on the inside of the snaps of my pants because I would break out around my stomach. In elementary school, I could only wear 14-karat gold jewelry and I haven't been able to take a bubble bath in years.

Luckily, it's not as extreme anymore, and I'm willing to sacrifice bubbles in my bath if I have to. However, eczema isn't something that just goes away and you have to treat it accordingly. I've tried my fair share of treatments over the years, but I think I finally have a pretty good defense team, especially for when it strikes extra badly in the summer and winter months. Extreme heat and cold can make your skin do weird things anyway, and add eczema to the mix and you've got yourself a par-tay. What can you do to make your skin happier? Here are my favorite tools.

Eucerin Daily Replenishing Moisturizing Lotion is my main line of defense. I use it after every shower and it always seem to help. Eucerin is one of the only things I've been using since I was younger that is always helpful, and the replenishing lotion is perfect.

Cortizone 10 Eczema is what I like to put on after the Eucerin, just for extra protection. Also, when I have a bit of a breakout this helps me stop itching like a maniac, even if just for a little while. When I use this one I concentrate it on my arms and legs since that's where breakouts seem to happen most.

Jergens Ultra Healing is something I only recently started using, thanks to Influenster. I don't necessarily use it on a daily basis like the others, but it's there when I need it. I especially like using it on my hands and the heels of my feet, as they can get pretty crazy in the winter time.

Like any condition, eczema is different for everyone that deals with it and what works for me might not work for you. But if you're struggling to get a handle on your skin, these products are worth a try.

Song of the week Wednesday

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

When I heard that Helene was starting something called Song of the Week Wednesday, I was pretty excited. I incorporate music a lot on the blog anyway because it's such a huge part of my life.

So, this week I'm gonna be totally predictable and put in a Taylor Swift song.

Bonus: Because I can't just be normal and leave it at one song. Please watch this video and be amazed by her genius. That is all.

Monday Musings

Monday, November 10, 2014

Don't you think Mondays are the perfect time for a brain dump? Just me? Okay. Here's one anyway... hope ya don't mind.

+ Working retail is kinda crazy but kinda fun.

+ I finally read that Zoella article everyone's been talking about. It's gross. I got mad. Don't read it.

+ On that note, why do we as women still insist on tearing each other down? I can't comprehend it. Ugh. A blog post for another day.....

+ I'm seeing Taylor again next year!!?? I'm guess you could say I'm pretty happy about it. I am not, however, pretty happy about how far away it is until then.

+ Pretty dang excited for the holidays.

+ London did the Cowboys good.

+ The shows on my dvr are just piling up and piling up because I'm too busy watching the shows I've seen a thousand times. So twisted.

+ Ya know that whole taking chances thing I talked about once? Yeah, still working on that.... baby steps.

+ Yeah. #demfeels

What are your musings today?

It's only life.

Friday, November 7, 2014

Life isn't perfect. It's messy and unpredictable and heartbreaking. But it can also be wonderful and beautiful and magical if you let it. Take the good and the bad and just breathe.

Don't ever lose your faith or that spark that makes you so wonderful. It's only life. And it's your life, so make your own rules. And refuse to give up.
